A brief history of the abandoned hotel at the Sete Cidades overlook. The hotel was build as a luxury accommodation in the early eighties. It was only open for two years before it folded. Reasons for the failure are thought to be lack of tourism, the tourism bureau wasn't formed until about 25 years later. Also the location is remote. While only 15 miles from Ponta Delgada it takes a steep, twisty mountain road to get to it. It has the best view of the Lagoas, most rooms had a balcony overlooking them. It was guarded after it closed but is no longer protected except by signs and is one of the most popular attractions on Sao Miguel.
